New Teapot is Expected to Be a ‘Global Best Seller’ for the hand-made novelty teapot manufacturer
The artisan teapot pottery Carters of Suffolk – based at Stonham Barns Park – has announced the introduction of a new hand-made, novelty teapot to celebrate 250 years of Jane Austen’s literary excellence.
The teapot will be available for the 2025-year anniversary celebrations which will include the release of a brand-new four-part BBC Drama Miss Austen. The teapot is a Special Edition to follow the already top-selling Jane Austen Books teapots from the Classic Book Collection which sell in large numbers in the UK, Europe and the USA. The teapot features six of the author’s books replicated in pastel blues, purple and peach with beautiful flower decorations, and an open book for a lid which features a portrait of Jane Austen and an anniversary inscription.
The star-studded production of Gill Hornby’s novel of the same name will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One marking 250 years since Jane Austen’s birth. Miss Austen is a drama depicting the literary mystery of Cassandra Austen burning her famous sister Jane’s letters – interpreting the fascinating, witty and heart-breaking story of sisterly love.
Comments John Baldry of Carters of Suffolk, ‘We are hugely proud to be launching this Jane Austen memorabilia teapot at the time of the 250 Years Anniversary as a tribute to one of one of the finest names in English Literature.’
‘Jane Austen’s aim was not to write brilliant novels but to write novels that provided positive moral instruction, and she succeeded to the point that her novels have been translated into 35 languages and inspired countless adaptations, biographies and documentaries.’
‘She is the epitome of English culture, and we are delighted to be celebrating her success with the launch of our second-generation Jane Austen teapots. Our original teapot is loved by so many people and is the setting for many an ‘Afternoon Tea’ not only in the UK but internationally. It is with a great sense of satisfaction that we can offer these new beautifully handmade teapots to followers of English literature and period drama.’
‘This new initiative reinforces Carters of Suffolk’s position as a pivotal British supplier of ceramics both within the UK – and globally.’
English novelist Jane Austen was born in Hampshire in 1775 and grew up in a tight knit family as one of eight children. She had six brothers and a beloved older sister, Cassandra. Jane’s formal education was limited but she had access to her father’s large library and was encouraged to read by her parents. She began writing novels at an early age and by the time she was 21 she had begun to write novels that are among the finest in English Literature. She died aged 41 years in 1817 and is buried at Winchester Cathedral.
Jane Austen wrote six novels that continue to captivate readers almost 200 years after her death – Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. She did make money from her books but was paid poorly compared to other writers. Austen’s total income from writing was around £575 which is equivalent to just over £45,000 at today’s prices. Her novels are known for their romantic plots, but they explore the complexities of relationships and the role of social status in shaping them. Her heroines are often strong-willed and independent, challenging traditional gender roles.
The pottery’s most popular teapot designs include, The Classic British Collection, The Book Collection, The Aga Range, The Baking Range, Figurines, The Animal range and The Classic Car and Locomotive Collections.
The new Jane Austen 250-Years Anniversary teapots will be available at £41 for a one cup teapot or £109 for the full-size version. For more information and/or a catalogue of the handmade, novelty teapots, call 01728 860475, or visit Carters of Suffolk at Stonham Barns Park www.cartersofsuffolk.com
